There are many people in states across America who are on the minimum wage and as such often struggle to make ends meet financially. However, there may be good news in store for some people this year, as it was recently announced that sixteen states across the country would be increasing the minimum wage, which means that workers could find themselves earning that little extra and being able to ease the financial strain when it comes to their household budget.
Last year saw a rally take place in New York City, with workers, Labor leaders and activists all lobbying for a minimum wage of $15.00. While the states that have been identified as planning to increase the minimum wage are not quite offering that much, some including Alaska and Massachusetts are increase the rate by one dollar an hour, which will take the Alaska minimum wage to $9.75 per hour and the Massachusetts one to $10 per hour. California and Nebraska will also increase the rate by one dollar per hour, taking the minimum hourly wage to $10 and $9 per hour respectively.
Other states that will be increasing the national wage this year include:
- New York
- Rhode Island
- South Dakota
- West Virginia
In addition, cost of living increases in a number of other states could also result in marginal increases to the minimum wage. This includes states such as:
- New Jersey
Increases over several years
In addition to the increases that will be seen in the minimum wage this year, a number of states have agreed to implement minimum wage increases over a period of several years in order to eventually bring their minimum wage to $15 per hour. A number of cities in Washington, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Montana, California and Pennsylvania agreed to do this last year so over time workers in these areas could benefit from a considerable increase compared to the amount they are earning per hour at the moment.
An official from the National Employment Law Project in the United States spoke about the importance of these wage increases. She said that over the past year there had been great success in the fight to try and bring minimum wage levels to an amount that would make a positive impact on households in America.
